AI is changing how software is built. From generating code and documentation to supporting testing and debugging, AI tools can help development teams work more efficiently.

But using AI to develop a mobile app isn’t as simple as asking a tool to build it for you.

A successful mobile app still needs a clear product strategy, experienced developers, robust testing and ongoing human oversight. For businesses considering how to develop a mobile app using AI, it’s important to ask where AI can genuinely add value without compromising quality, security or accountability.

At Tapadoo, we’ve spent the last nine months researching exactly that through controlled AI pilots across our software development workflow, alongside researchers from Ulster University’s School of Computing.

Here’s what we believe a responsible approach looks like.

1. Start with the app, not the AI

Before choosing an AI tool, define what you’re trying to build.

What problem will the app solve? Who will use it? What does success look like? What functionality is genuinely required?

These questions should come before technology.

AI can help with elements of discovery and research, but it shouldn’t determine your product strategy. A development team needs to understand the business, users and technical environment before deciding where AI belongs.

Starting with the problem rather than the technology also prevents a common mistake: using AI simply because it’s available.

2. Identify where AI can genuinely help

Once you understand what you’re building, look at the development lifecycle and identify tasks where AI could provide useful support.

Depending on the project, this might include:

  • Generating or explaining code
  • Creating documentation
  • Suggesting test cases
  • Supporting debugging
  • Working with repetitive development tasks
  • Helping developers understand unfamiliar code
  • Assisting with research and technical investigation

The important point is that not every development task benefits from AI.

A tool might appear to save time when generating code, for example, but if developers then spend longer reviewing and correcting that code, the overall benefit may be limited.

That’s why AI-assisted mobile app development should be approached as an experiment to be measured, rather than an assumption to be accepted.

3. Use experienced mobile developers to guide AI

AI can generate code. It doesn’t remove the need to understand that code.

This is particularly important in mobile app development, where applications need to work within specific operating systems, architectures and device environments.

An experienced iOS or Android developer can assess whether generated code is appropriate for the platform, whether it fits the application’s architecture and whether it will remain maintainable as the product evolves.

That human expertise is essential.

Research from Stack Overflow’s 2025 Developer Survey found that 46% of developers distrust the accuracy of AI tools, compared with 33% who trust them. The most common frustration was receiving answers that were “almost right, but not quite”, identified by 66% of respondents.

AI should therefore support the developer, rather than replace their judgement.

4. Protect your data when developing a mobile app with AI

Responsible AI development also means understanding what happens to information entered into AI tools.

When developing an app, teams may have access to confidential source code, customer information, business requirements or other sensitive material. That information shouldn’t simply be entered into an AI tool without understanding how it is handled.

A responsible approach means establishing clear rules around:

  • Which AI tools are approved
  • What information can be shared
  • How sensitive data is handled
  • Who is responsible for reviewing AI output
  • How AI-generated work is incorporated into the development process

For organisations operating in Ireland and the wider EU, responsible AI use also needs to be considered alongside the evolving regulatory landscape, including the EU AI Act.

5. Test AI-generated code properly

AI-generated code still needs to be tested.

In fact, the need for robust testing arguably becomes more important when AI is involved, because developers may be able to produce code faster than they can manually assess every part of it.

Testing should cover the same areas as any professional mobile application, including:

  • Functional testing
  • Unit and integration testing
  • UI testing
  • Security testing
  • Performance testing
  • Testing across relevant devices and operating system versions

AI can potentially assist with parts of this process, but it doesn’t remove the need for a proper QA approach.

6. Start small and measure the results

One of the principles behind Tapadoo’s AI approach is to start with small, bounded pilots.

Rather than introducing an AI tool across the entire company immediately, we test individual use cases and measure what actually changes.

That means looking beyond adoption. If a developer uses an AI tool, that’s an example of adoption. It isn’t necessarily evidence of success.

Instead, we want to understand whether the tool:

  • Saves meaningful time
  • Improves quality
  • Reduces repetitive work
  • Creates additional review effort
  • Introduces new risks
  • Delivers measurable value

We’ve had pilots that worked and pilots that didn’t. Both provide useful information.

That evidence-led approach is also at the heart of our ongoing research with Ulster University’s School of Computing.

7. Put responsible AI governance in place

AI shouldn’t be something that everyone in a software team uses differently without guidance.

A responsible approach needs clear governance.

At Tapadoo, we’ve introduced a company-wide AI policy and trained our team on AI use. This gives everyone a shared understanding of how AI tools should be used safely and responsibly.

Governance should make experimentation safer, not eliminate it.

For businesses developing a mobile app, that might mean establishing approved tools, data-handling rules, review processes and clear accountability before AI becomes embedded in the development workflow.

8. Keep humans responsible for the final app

Ultimately, someone needs to be accountable for the application you put in front of your customers. That responsibility can’t be passed to an AI tool.

Product decisions, architecture, security, quality and user experience all require human judgement. AI can support those decisions, but the development team remains responsible for understanding and validating the result.

That’s particularly important when working with an external development partner.

AI is another tool within that relationship. It isn’t a replacement for it.

A responsible approach to AI-assisted mobile app development

Start with the problem you’re trying to solve. Identify where AI could help. Test it on a manageable use case. Have experienced people review the output. Test the software properly. Measure whether it genuinely improved the process. Then decide whether it’s worth doing more.
